Pew!Pew! has been released! It should be available in the App store tomorrow morning after the nightly refresh.
I’ll edit this post with a direct link as soon as it’s live.
Update: iTunes link to Pew!Pew!
A note on pricing:
I have elected to release PewPew! at $1.99 instead of the de-facto standard $0.99. I have done this for a few reasons:
- I believe that I have created a well-done application with quality graphics and performance
- I do not believe that the $0.99 price is sustainable for most applications, especially those with a niche audience
- I will likely have a niche audience and all the research points to a better return with a slightly higher price for these kinds of applications. It won’t appeal to everyone, but those who find it appealing will hopefully be willing to spend $2 on it.
- I have a certain level of expectation for a $0.99 app, as do many other people - namely, none. If the developers of an app do not feel it is worth more than a buck then I’m not likely to either - and I don’t have a lot of expectations for anything that costs $1. (I’m not making fast food burgers here, I’m making fun toys!)
- My main goal with Pew!Pew! is to entertain people. Secondly is to learn the platform. Thirdly is to recoup my costs. At $1.99 I only have to sell half as many copies and, though I automatically eliminate a large part of the audience by going over $1, I am confident that those who “get” the fun of Pew!Pew! will pay for it.
Of course, I’m not immune to reality. I will have to wait and see how it does while I develop a few more fun tidbits.
I encourage other developers to really think about your app - don’t price it at $1 because you think you must, or because you think you’ll make it up on volume. You might, you might not. Price your app at what you think is a good value to your audience and start there. And remember, define your audience - the App store is too big for you to think your audience is “all iPhone owners” - it’s not and you would help you to understand that!
OK, I’ll put my soapbox away! Have fun with your ray gun!

Pew!Pew! submitted to App Store (again!)
My upcoming app Pew!Pew! (more information below) was originally submitted to the Apple iTunes App Store back on March 1st. I wasn’t completely finished with all the bug fixes and enhancements to it, but I wanted to get it into the approval process early so that when it was initially rejected for whatever it was initially rejected for, that would be the only fixes I needed to work on to get it back into the App Store. Surprise! The original version of the app was accepted as is! (memory leak and all...)
I actually had to remove Pew!Pew! from sale as I didn’t want any potential reviews to be based on that version, but the new v.1.1 is In Review and will hopefully be available for purchase later this week. Hurray!
I’m excited about this application. Yes, it’s a novelty app, but it is well done. I commissioned some excellent graphics, some awesome sounds (some of which have to wait until v.1.2) and an intuitive, fun interface. For a first iPhone app, I’m happy with it. I’m also happy to have it complete so that I can start focusing on some more interesting upcoming apps I have in the works.
